“The course itself is quite a good way of getting to step outside your comfort zone and adapting to the not-so-normal camping life. Rock climbing and river rafting was the activities I enjoyed the most and I could encourage my teammates to also do it. There have been many developments within myself. As I was being placed in a group setting allowed developing an awareness of my behaviour in a group. As a person who is mostly on their own in my normal life outside the academy and basically being an only child, I needed to make a concerted effort to be aware of all individuals around be more. I needed to be more tolerant and accepting of their habits and other behaviours. There were times that I couldn’t adapt to everything but the time periods gave me practice for various situations.

‘I’ve learned to put a tent, I have learned that for everything wrong you do there’s a punishment and I have learned that for every action there is a consequence. I was sad that we couldn’t complete all activities because of the rain. I would have liked to experience new tasks. I felt like carrying a mountain on my back but I also knew that something new would come from that and I must say: I have some muscles. Now when my mom puts me out of the house I can just put up a tent for me in the back yard. If I get an opportunity to come again, I will come. It was fun and very exciting. ‘Basically to me, Outward Bound was a great experience. I learnt a whole lot of things like pitching up a tent, hiking, climbing the Jacob’s Ladder and riding boats. And Outward Bound’s slogan is true because I never knew that I would walk long distances on the beach and sleep on a thin mattress but it was a great privilege.
