WORLD CUP LEGACY

2010 FIFA World Cup Legacy Proposal

2010 World Cup Concerns

The 2010 FIFA World Cup is likely to amplify and compound existing negative paradigms with youth at risk, namely:

• Recruitment into gangs
• Drugs, alcohol, & absence of supervision
• HIV /AIDS
• Extended school holidays increasing youth vulnerability
• Child prostitution/trafficking
• Foreign capital/currency actuating criminal behaviour

Grassroot Soccer (GRS) trains soccer stars, coaches, teachers, and peer educators throughout the world’s most HIV-affected countries to deliver an interactive HIV prevention and life skills curriculum to youth.

Skillz Program

•Run at the FIFA Football for Hope Center in Khayelitsha
• Four 5-day programs run throughout the World Cup period
• The Skillz Training Program, combining learning football skills and raising HIV education through the objectives of:
• Life Skills
• Voluntary counseling/HIV testing
• Tournament matches
• Educational activities

Grassroot Soccer will select 56 students from their 100 graduates from each of their four Skillz programs to attend a subsequent 5-day Outward Bound program.
These 56 students divided into two programs of 28 students

One group will participate in a personal development program with the objectives:

•Capacity Building
• Resilience and coping skills
• Team work and effectiveness
• Exploring Diversity
• Environmental Skills

The second group of 28 students will participate in a leadership program with the objectives:

• Problem solving & creative thinking
• Leadership Skills
• Communication
• Decision making strategies
• Environmental Skills

Outward Bound will take 224 students on four 5-day courses through June/July

If you are interested in funding a group of students to attend this program or are willing to support transport costs please review the full proposal below.
