Outward Bound South Africa has recognised that the rates of gender-based violence (GBV) and femicide have reached crisis proportions that impact profoundly on the lives and wellbeing of survivors, families, communities and the broader society. GBV is so entrenched and pervasive that it will require much larger efforts to ensure that it is rooted out. However, most programmes have been reactive rather than proactive and have not effectively dealt with the root causes that find expression through cultural practices and social norms. There are not many programmes in South Africa that deal with young people and how they can play a role in preventing GBV from happening to them or to prevent them from becoming perpetrators of GBV in the future.

We are in urgent need of programmes that will teach girls and boys to build a healthy self-esteem, discipline, leadership and respect for fundamental human rights. Our society has become devoid of education that helps to uplift, empower and inspire young people to be the best that they can be. We believe that such a society is possible but it will start with educating and empowering our girls and boys to become responsible and tolerant young men and women that embrace differences and respect the dignity of people. Outward Bound's experiential outdoor education is a powerful tool that transforms lives.
